Psychiatric Solutions’ Canyon Ridge Hospital Celebrates First Anniversary of Expansion

CHINO, Calif. — (May 18, 2010)Canyon Ridge Hospital, a full-service behavioral health facility, recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of its expansion that nearly doubled the number of beds at the facility allowing for record breaking admittance numbers. Canyon Ridge’s 47 new beds aid the facility’s existing service lines and address the community need for additional psychiatric services, as well as add 50-60 valuable job opportunities to the community.

Canyon Ridge, which serves patients from predominantly Riverside, Orange, San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties, is one of only three psychiatric hospitals in the area. Prior to the expansion, Canyon Ridge admitted an average of 200 patients each month; now, Canyon Ridge is admitting 375-400 patients each month on average. By increasing to a 106-bed capacity, Canyon Ridge was able to treat more than 1,000 patients last March—the most the facility has ever treated in a month since its 1989 grand opening. In addition to the extra beds, Canyon Ridge also increased its outpatient psychiatric programs by adding more group rooms for use in both intensive and partial outpatient treatment plans.

Additionally, all three area psychiatric facilities receive high amounts of admissions due to referrals from emergency rooms at medical/surgical hospitals nearby. Prior to Canyon Ridge’s expansion, it was receiving approximately 45-60 patients each month through emergency room referrals. Now, however, that number is 175-185 a month. Canyon Ridge’s expansion alleviated patient waiting times in medical/surgical emergency rooms and relieved the unnecessary strain put on emergency rooms by patients needing to be admitted for psychiatric services elsewhere.

Of the three psychiatric facilities in the four-county area, only Canyon Ridge and one other facility admit adolescents. With the dire need for more adolescent psychiatric services in the Inland Empire, Canyon Ridge can better serve the mental health needs of the community’s youth with up to 41 beds dedicated solely to adolescents. For optimal treatment and patient safety, patients admitted for inpatient treatment tracks are assigned to one of four respective units: adolescent, low acuity adult, midrange acuity adult or higher range acuity adult. By relying on “swing doors” to strategically enclose parts of the new wings, the hospital can safely and securely allot beds to different units depending on influxes in admission demographics or community need.

During the construction period of the new state-of-the-art wings, Canyon Ridge was able to keep all 59 original beds available for patients. New furniture throughout the entire facility helps maintain a consistent and modern look in both the original and new patient rooms. In addition to the new patient rooms and group therapy rooms, Canyon Ridge increased the size of its business and medical records offices.

“There is a growing need for psychiatric services in Chino and the Greater Inland Empire, and Canyon Ridge is making all the appropriate decisions and adjustments to meet the mental health needs of our community through expansions, state-of-the-art facilities and the highest trained staff,” said Jeff McDonald, chief executive officer of Canyon Ridge Hospital. “We strive daily to provide the most patients possible with the highest level of patient care, and are honored to open our doors even wider through this expansion.”
